my thoughts on art auctions
It seems obvious that auctions are the way to achieve the best prices in the art worldbut this happens only once one has achieved a reputation as a good artist.
trying to sell artworks before one has achieved a reputation is very tricky
look at Vincent van Gogh whose reputation for artistic genius was achieved only after he died
he sold only one painting during his short lifetime--The Red Vineyard, was created in 1888. It is now on display in the Pushkin Museum in Moscow, Russia
Unfortunately,unlike Vincent-- most artists spend a whole lifetime trying to build up their reputation so that they will be able to achieve good prices
so how did Vincent van Goch achieve the reputation for artistic genius?
if you read anything about Vincent you will realise that he cared little about reputation
he was really passionate about being in touch with that creative spirit within himself
and that is what the world has eventually recognised and rewarded with great bounty
Artists need to be given the space and time to get in touch with the creative spirit just like Vincent
but artists should not have to struggle and starve like Vincent
that is why I think artists need to let professional art dealers manage their auctions in a way that will protect the reputation of the artist

The ten most expensive art works ever sold at auction, following the new record set in New York by a 1932 Pablo Picasso painting, "Nude, green leaves and bust".
Unless stated otherwise, all works quoted are paintings.

4. Picasso, "Dora Maar au chat" (Dora Maar with cat): 95.2 million dollars - sold 2006
5. Gustav Klimt, "Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I": 87.9 million dollars - sold 2006
6. Francis Bacon, "Triptych 1976": 86.2 million dollars, sold 2008
7. Vincent Van Gogh, "Portrait of Dr. Gachet": 82.5 million dollars, sold 1990
8. Auguste Renoir, "Au Moulin de la Galette": 78.1 million dollars, 1990
9. Peter Paul Rubens, "Massacre of the Innocents": 76.7 million dollars, 2002

The most expensive work ever sold is believed to be Jackson Pollock's painting "No 5, 1948", which changed hands privately for 140 million dollars in 2006.
